Health Data Analysis
- Secondary analysis of electronic health records: A textbook on using data generated during routine clinical care for scientific research. Includes case studies based on data from the MIMIC Database.
- Photoplethysmography: A textbook on photoplethysmography, including chapters on ‘Wearable Photoplethysmography Devices’ and ‘Photoplethysmography signal processing and synthesis’, which are publicly available here.

Statistics
- An Introduction to Medical Statistics: A comprehensive textbook on statistics for use in clinical studies.
- Statistics Notes in the BMJ: Although not strictly a textbook, this series of notes provides a very helpful introduction to several statistical topics frequently encountered in medical research, written by Bland, Altman et al.
Engineering Techniques
- The Scientist and Engineer’s Guide to Digital Signal Processing
- Engineering better care: A report on “a systems approach to health and care design and continuous improvement”.
- Biomedical Instrumentation Lecture Notes: A helpful course introducing several types of physiological measurement (ECG, EEG, respiration, pulse oximetry and blood pressure).
- Digital Signal Processing: Includes an introduction to using Python.
